September Writing Prompts, Day 10 – Sun pillars

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Sun pillars”.

I am so much better at thinking of appropriate photos for these prompts, then at writing about them.  But, that’s why I am trying to add these prompts to my roster – to work on my writing.  I mean, I write my morning pages, but creating something for public consumption (aside from work-related tutorials, etc.) is another thing.  Beyond a few words, my blog posts tend to be photo related, with pithy comments – even the more writing-related posts (like Share Your World).

But none of this has anything to do with Sun pillars.  Pillars of the Sun.  There was a book called Pillars of the Earth, about a multi-generational building of a cathedral that was turned into a mini series on TV a few years back.  I really enjoyed the book a lot.  Pillars of the Sun sounds like something in a Greek temple of the sun – you know, pillars holding up the temple that have the Sun painted on them?  Or maybe pillars holding up the Sun, because it really is mounted above our flat earth.

Maybe I need to think about this a bit more…

September Writing Prompts, Day 9 – Aurora nights

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Aurora nights”.

Aurora Nights:  mild mannered instructional designer by day, intrepid undercover operative by night.  Or not – I’m kind of tired…

September Writing Prompts, Day 8 – Fire whirls

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Fire whirls”.

Fire whirls and swirls, and keeps us warm in the house and on our deck.  Well, us as in Kevin and me – kitties are not allowed to enjoy the deck fire, but I don’t think they are all that fussed as long as they have their own place in front of a fire to keep warm as our nights get chillier.

September Writing Prompts, Day 7 – Belt of Venus

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Belt of Venus”.

Facts:  “The Belt of Venus, Venus’s Girdle, or antitwilight arch is an atmospheric phenomenon visible shortly before sunrise or after sunset, during civil twilight, when a pinkish glow extending roughly 10–20° above the horizon surrounds the observer.”

More interesting (not that the facts aren’t interesting…), I have to ask myself if the belt of Venus has a cool belt buckle, you know, like hearts or the symbol for woman.  Unfortunately (for you) I could also see Venus de Milo in the ring with Rocky, giving him the belt of Venus…

September Writing Prompts, Day 6 – Mythical moonbows

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Mythical moonbows”.

I should google things more often.  Apparently, a moonbow is “a rare atmospheric phenomenon, produced when sunlight reflected from the moon’s surface is refracted off moisture in the air.”  And there is something called Zambia’s mythical moonbow (http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20141016-zambias-mythical-moonbow), which you can apparently see at Victoria Falls.

I know, I know.  What’s with all this factual nonsense? m Why not a fantastical story about bows tied around the moon by aliens, and only discovered recently.  Why would aliens gift wrap the moon?  Is it an invitation to come up and join the party?  Is it a gift for the overlords who are soon coming to destroy us all?  OK.  I’m out of ideas now.  I do wish I could see those moonbows from our deck though!

September Writing Prompts, Day 5 – Noctilucent clouds

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Noctilucent clouds”.

Now that’s a very cool word, noctilucent.  Noctilucent!  No idea what it means.  Oh…it goes with the clouds, as in night shining clouds!   Or “tenuous cloud-like phenomena in the upper atmosphere of Earth. They consist of ice crystals and are only visible during astronomical twilight.”  There is a word for everything, and if there isn’t, we make it up (covfefe), although it really only works if people can figure out what you are trying to tell them.

There were no noctilucent clouds in the sky this morning as I walked to the gym.  But I guess I wouldn’t expect there to be given that the definition says they are only visible at twilight.  Maybe I’ll have a look later…but more likely, I’ll forget.

September Writing Prompts, Day 4 – Volcanic devils

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Volcanic devils”.

I have no idea what this story means, but here goes!

They weren’t just any devils.  Spewing ash and dust and lumps of fire, they were volcanic devils.  Best stay out of their way!

September Writing Prompts, Day 3 – Harvest veil

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Harvest veil”.

I always find these prompts interesting.  What exactly is a “harvest veil”?  A veil worn by some poor young girl who is being sacrificed to ensure a good harvest?  Why did my mind go there?  Perhaps a harvest veil is a thin netting laid over produce in the field to keep away bug-like pests.  Maybe the harvest veil is the transition from summer to fall.  I don’t know.  I only know that this time of year means yummy corn on the cob!

September Writing Prompts, Day 2 – Watermelon snow

From Putting My Feet in the Dirt (https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/), September’s prompts are here: https://puttingmyfeetinthedirt.com/2019/09/01/september-2019-writing-prompts/

And today, the prompt is “Watermelon snow”.

Watermelon snow?  Watermelons don’t grow in the snow.  No one eats watermelon in the winter when there is snow on the ground.  But I guess you can have watermelon-flavoured snowcones.  As long as they are made from seedless watermelons, ’cause that would be a not-so-pleasant surprise.  Not that I would be eating a watermelon-flavoured snowcone.  Watermelon is Kevin’s thing, not mine…and Elliot agrees!
