Blogging from A to Z Challenge: F is for… (#AtoZChallenge)

Welcome to my April 2021 Great and Powerful Blogging from A to Z Challenge!

I’ve revealed my theme (Photos and Stories), and once again, in spite of the best laid plans (who am I kidding, there were no plans, only aspirations) I am going to be blogging my theme letters on the fly.  So, here goes nothing!

Today, F is for Fireplace in the Living Room. Ok, I confess. Our house has a lot of fireplaces. Five to be exact. Four of them were coal burners originally, and one was a wood burning fireplace.

A few years ago, we converted three to gas, Kevin having bought several used fireplace inserts over the years until we were ready to take the plunge. You have seen one of these fireplaces for sure over the years, usually (always) with kittens in front of it. This is the fireplace in our living room, and we use it all the time, all year round. Houses like ours, as old as ours, here in Victoria typically are not insulated, and since it’s so big as well, it isn’t very warm in the winter, fall, spring, or in the evenings (Victoria also being a place that cools off in the evenings even on the hottest summer day).

Interesting fact about our fireplaces, they were part of Sears catalogues kits. Back in the day, you could buy pieces of houses and even complete houses in the mail. And this fireplace was one such item. We have even seen the same fireplace in another house here in Victoria. That was fun! The wood mantle and trim, and the tile are all original, amazingly not destroyed over years of being a care home and a bed and breakfast, and the insert for the gas insert we picked out carefully to match the character of the house. We are happy with it, and the kitties are ok with it too.

  1. I love that fireplace! We had one in a house we rented for several years but when we bought this one it didn’t have a fireplace. I miss it so much. I’ve talked my husband into letting me get a fire pit for the backyard and that will have to do.

  2. Is that Victoria, Australia? I had a n Uncle in Castlemaine who we visited in 1968…
    Great Fireplaces!

  3. I always like seeing your kitties lounging in front of the fireplace. Very cozy they are. 🙂

  4. Oh well, if the kitties approve it must be ok! It is, indeed, very fine.
