Writober, Day 5

Welcome to “Writober,” a challenge hosted by Maria at Experience Writing.

Today’s chosen prompt: Blood. “Prompt: Write a poem using blood as a symbol for life, a romantic encounter, and/or death.”

Transformed

You see nothing
in the mirror

but feel face
drained of blood

two pricks of red
in your neck

and a hunger
grating, churning

inside where your
heart should be

a cavern that feels
empty, as a melon

scooped out for breakfast.
You stare and scream.

Writober, Day 4

Welcome to “Writober,” a challenge hosted by Maria at Experience Writing.

Today’s chosen prompt: Mirrors “Mirrors distort images in different ways. This distortion creates a conflict between seeing and believing which causes discomfort. The reflection in a mirror is also reversed, so though you know you are moving your right hand, if you switched places with the you in the mirror, you would be moving your left hand. Mirrors symbolize reversals, reflection, and distortions. What is your relationship with mirrors? Can you think of a time that a mirror frightened you? If you slipped through your looking glass, what would your mirrorworld look like?”

Mirror

Once I paused
to glance
at red hair
curling around ears
wide green eyes hovering
over pointed nose
lips pressed together,
content to know
I was still here.

Today, I brush past,
look away before
the wisp that was once
my brow, my cheek, my visage
reveals walls behind
where I stand
in shadows,
waiting for night.

Writober, Day 3

Welcome to “Writober,” a challenge hosted by Maria at Experience Writing.

Today’s chosen prompt: Texture. “What does fear feel like? Often textures combine with smells, like putrid mushy rot, or earthy swampy decay; the sharp metallic iron of dripping blood, or the sweet snap of crisp ant armor. Try describing three or more different sensory perceptions, then a physical reaction, and a contradictory thought. Or you could use sensory imagery from at least three different senses, follow it with a flash of triggered memory, then a conflicting physical sensation, or several conflicting sensations at once.”

A Dream?

Step out of bed
into slick, sticky, wet
on cold wood floors.

Slip, crash to knees
hands slam down
slip in slime

darkly red in dim
light. Gasp, “Blood”
and rise to flick

on lights, eyes resting
on emptiness where death
waited in your dream.

Writober, Day 2

Welcome to “Writober,” a challenge hosted by Maria at Experience Writing.

Today’s chosen prompt “What sounds scare you? Think of a time you were startled by a sound, in the dark, alone at night. Describe it as clearly and with as much detail as you can. In your poem, try to recreate the fear you felt through only describing sounds.

Sounds in the Night

I lie in bed
darkness weighs
like a soft blanket
comforting. But then
I hear a creak,
was that a step?

Tapping tapping up the stairs
towards my bedroom,
the swishing of a cloak
against wall and door,
a muffled “ahem”
as if to warn me —

They are coming.

Writober, Day 1

Welcome to “Writober,” a challenge hosted by Maria at Experience Writing.

Today’s prompt (well one of them as there are a few to choose from, and this is the one I am going for): “Prompt: Focus on your breath. Cover your ears and listen to your own breathing. Use punctuation, repetition, enjambment, and/or internal rhyme to create breath in your poem. Write about one of your deepest fears, expressing how your breathing changes when gripped by fear.”

And today, I will write a Breath Poem as suggested

Sick and Alone at Home

Warm blanket
covers me
hidden from ghosts
