Writober, Day 3

Welcome to “Writober,” a challenge hosted by Maria at Experience Writing.

Today’s chosen prompt: Texture. “What does fear feel like? Often textures combine with smells, like putrid mushy rot, or earthy swampy decay; the sharp metallic iron of dripping blood, or the sweet snap of crisp ant armor. Try describing three or more different sensory perceptions, then a physical reaction, and a contradictory thought. Or you could use sensory imagery from at least three different senses, follow it with a flash of triggered memory, then a conflicting physical sensation, or several conflicting sensations at once.”

A Dream?

Step out of bed
into slick, sticky, wet
on cold wood floors.

Slip, crash to knees
hands slam down
slip in slime

darkly red in dim
light. Gasp, “Blood”
and rise to flick

on lights, eyes resting
on emptiness where death
waited in your dream.

  1. Great use of texture building to a really nice ending.

  2. Your texture breathes, and the silence feels louder than fear. Like a nightmare that forgot to end.
