Tuesday Tales

I’m back with Tuesday Tales.  I am taking some writing classes right now, so thought I would share some of that work with y’all. Another poem for you.

Ear Worm

No, I’m not talkin’ about RFK Jr’s burrowing brain
worm tunneling through commonsense and compassion
folds, paranoia the only light at the end of the tunnel;

I’m talkin’ about that song, you know the one,
you hear it once, playlist blaring on the car stereo, then
it pops up again, again, again, whack-a-mole style,

a ceti alpha eel hooking onto your earlobe
like that dragon earring you wore when you were a teenager,
heaving itself up over the cliff of your antiragus
dragging itself into the canal, peering over its shoulder
furtively checking to make sure you haven’t noticed,

tumbling down into the dark drum
setting itself up, a protestor, “you shall not remove me!”

The tiny tin voice of the radio band expands,
echoing in empty caverns, twisting to the surface,
bursting forth:

“Baby, uh uh uh uh uh uh uh out in the flood,
when you uh uh uh uh you bite your tongue all you get is a mouthful
of blood.”

A song with only eight lines…
you’d think I’d remember the lyrics.

  1. From RFK Jr to Wrath of Khan, you hit some pretty gruesome ear worms, but none as bad as that damned song that is on forever repeat!
