Makes me think of that Toby Keith song: ‘Whiskey for My Men and Beer for My Horses.’ But the horses might take offense at having to pony up.

The expression “pony up to the bar” is a blend of two idioms: “pony up,” meaning to pay money, and “belly up to the bar,” which refers to approaching the bar closely enough that one’s stomach touches it. The phrase “pony up to the bar” combines the concepts of paying and physically approaching a bar. It really is a mixed metaphor.
