Tuesday Tales
Continuing on with my life in drafts
Or just telling you about weird things that strike me during quieter moments…
Like today, I was looking at a calendar (one of my virtual ones as I haven’t owned a paper calendar in years, well except for the one our realtor sends us at Christmas and I used to check off days once I give Nico his meds, I know, weird.) Anyway, looking at the calendar and wondering, is Sunday the beginning of the week or the end of the week?
In my world, Sunday certainly marks the end of the weekend, but for Kevin it is the beginning of the weekend since these days he works Saturdays and has Mondays off. But Sunday usually appears as the beginning of the week in calendars. Why is this? Is it the overwhelming desire to think many people’s weeks begin with a day off? Really, a hold over from when most businesses were closed on Sundays though, since nowadays many people have to work Sundays. Or is it just the way it has always been?
What would happen if we began the week on Monday in the calendar? Or let’s be really radical and begin the week on Saturday, or rather ending the week on Friday. Although, that is my week. Maybe calendars should be customizable to reflect how individuals think of the week. Maybe Google calendar can do that already and I just don’t know it.
Until then, we have Schrodinger’s Sundays…both the beginning and the end of the week at the same time.

Hah! I’ve often pondered the same. It makes no sense to say that Saturday & Sunday are the ‘weekend’, but the first day of the ‘week’ is Sunday! The calendar that comes built in with your computer, if you’re using a Windows program, lets you alter the calendar. Go into “Settings”, choose “Calendar Settings”, and select ‘Monday’ as the first day of the week.
Good to know!
Definitely Monday is the first day of the week IMO! However, I used to have this discussion with my mother who claimed it was Sunday. Her reasoning was religious – God rested on the seventh day or Sabbath which, in the Old Testament, was Saturday therefore Sunday must be the beginning of a new week. She always went out of her way to find a diary which began on Sunday.
Didn’t the big guy rest on the seventh day? Therefore it must be the end of the new week, right? Hmmmm….
