Still sleepy
A response in avoidance of the Daily Post’s Writing Prompt https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_prompt/i-am-a-rock/
Yesterday, I was tired. I came home from work, fed kitties, and then slept for 2 hours. There’s a reason I don’t like to take naps (or power naps for that matter) – all I ever want to do after a “nap” is go back to sleep.
This is what I found when I woke up.
It’s still a mad world

Yesterday my post was titled “Mad world”, so, naturally I heard this all day:
And now that you’re all good and depressed, here are some pictures to cheer you up.
Oh, did I say cheer you up? I meant make you sleepy..
Mad world

One final thing that struck me about the SFU Burnaby campus. Then our journey there ends.
Lots of long rows of empty spaces…
Some with green space…
…some of it filled with empty chairs in anticipation of graduation…
…some of it picturesque…
…and, of course, the obligatory Starbucks at the end.
Coincidence

Before I start, I need to state for the record that this IS an avoidance prompt. It was written before the Daily Prompt came out this morning. It’s just coincidence that this blogger is blogging today about a very strange land…Just saying…
So, going through my pictures from my brief, but inspirational, road trip, what shall I post next? Perhaps you would like to see some of the architecture?
Concrete. Grey concrete. A concrete jungle in the middle of stunning mountain scenery. It does have a kind of appealing beauty as you wander around for a couple of days in the sunlight, but imagine being on this campus for 4 years, most of the time during the rainy/foggy season. I don’t know about you, but that thought depresses me.
Anyway, the “modernist concrete” buildings at SFU Burnaby were designed in 1963 by Arthur Erickson Here is where the SFU website talks about him: https://www.sfu.ca/archives/archives-program/outreach/architechture.html. And here is his website (note that he died in 2009): http://www.arthurerickson.com/
Here are some of those buildings:
A little pond in the middle of everything – I believe some episodes of StarGate SG1 were filmed here. This is part of the huge space known as the Academic Quadrangle. Note that the surrounding buildings have no first floor. There is, however, a basement for offices and classrooms. Nice, eh? We wouldn’t want students to actually see the sun (the few times it appears) while they are in class.
This is looking down towards this large open space, under glass – the library is on the right.
There was one different building: The Diamond Alumni Centre, which was where several of the workshop events were held. It’s basically on the side of the mountain, so you can’t see any of it from the street.
Nothing like a good view

Today, scenery. Simon Fraser University (SFU) at Burnaby is on a mountain, hence the views:
There’s no place like home

And I’m back!! Feels good to sleep in my own bed. But I have a lot of pictures from my brief excursion waiting to be shared. So, over the past couple of days, I thought I would show you some of the cool things I saw at Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain.
So, today, I present some of the artwork you can see as you wander around campus.
Road Trip 2: the workshop continues

Still in Burnaby.
One more day of workshops, ending around 3:30, at which point the 5 of us will pile back into the van and our intrepid driver will brave the rush-hour streets of the greater Vancouver area to get back to the ferry.
Then home.
It’s been a good workshop, but being away and staying in hotel rooms always makes me very tired. And stuffed up. What’s with that anyway?
Here are a few tantalizing shots from my road trip. Don’t worry, I’ll show more over the weekend!
Road Trip!

Today I’m in Burnaby.
To be more precise, I’m at Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain. I’m here for a conference…well, more a mini-conference, or workshop if you will, for ETUG – Educational Technology Users Group – an organization I’ve been involved with for the past 5 or so years (I’m the vice-chair of the Steering Committee right now). ETUG workshops are a lot of fun – great people, interesting discussions, and good food. We were here at SFU 2 years ago, and the food was great. I’m looking forward to breakfast!
Kevin’s holding down the fort today and tomorrow – feeding kitties (and himself) and watering plants. Hope everyone survives until I get back tomorrow evening…
Just because

The story of yesterday.
It was cloudy and chilly, but there was no more rain. It was a busy day at work. After work I had dinner with the Book Club ladies at Blighty’s Bistro.
That is all.
Except, of course, for a quick tour in the garden to water and see what was happening. Here’s what’s new:
I’ll avoid in a moment

Sorry, I’m leaving the zone for a short moment, simply because I can’t let this prompt “If your government (local or national) accomplishes one thing this year, what would you like that to be?” go, without saying “lose the election!!!!!”
Ok, back to our regularly scheduled avoidance.
The other day, well it was a week or two ago when we replaced the tires on the car, I took some pictures of a tree. It was a very cool looking tree. That’s why I took pictures of it. People looked at me funny, but I didn’t care. It was a cool tree.
Oh, and by the way, it rained last night.
Now, here is that tree…
