Doris Ulmann (1882-1934) “was an American photographer, best known for her portraits of the people of Appalachia, particularly craftsmen and musicians, made between 1928 and 1934.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doris_Ulmann)
Most of her work is portraits, as noted, honest images of real people. And because she lived and died so long ago, once again I can bring you some of her images, in the public domain.

Her work reminds me a lot of Dorothea Lange. Gritty photos.

Wonderful images. Black and white film really shows the character in peoples faces. Sometimes color distracts. Very reminiscent of Dorothea Lange’s work.
I wonder if they knew each other?
It shows how important photographic work is to our history. How wonderful that she document the people of Appalachia during that time. Weekends In Maine
They are a great piece of history.
