I’ve been a participant in said challenge since 2014. Every year I choose a theme, and every year I blog it on the fly. Will this year be any different? Probably not, but I can dream!
Before I reveal my 2017 theme, here are themes from challenges past:
- 2014: I blogged about our house, and the befores and afters of the renos we did and changes we made after buying it.
- 2015: I blogged about interesting places in Victoria (all close to home).
- 2016: I blogged about learning to use my DSLR
- 2017: I blogged about my ‘hood in Welcome to James Bay!
And now, my Blogging from A to Z Challenge 2018 Theme! Drum roll please…..
The A to Z of Wabi Sabi: an exploration of wabi-sabi photography (and accompanying commentary)
What is wabi sabi? Well, in simple terms, it’s the Japanese art of imperfection. Which is perfect for me! My friend Susan in Regina, during out photography adventure back last September, introduced me to the term wabi sabi upon realizing that I loved taking pictures of broken and worn-out things. I’m looking forward to exploring more of this, under the three types mentioned in Discover Digital Photography: “photography of the overlooked beauty, photography of worn and weathered beauty, and adding imperfections to staged images to make them seem more real.” And using the letters of the alphabet to choose my subjects. Of course, I will be writing my own reflections on my photos, so I see this year’s challenge as a chance to practice both my photography and my writing.
I guess I better start planning!!

wabi sabit photography sounds interesting, I’ve not heard of it before. I think just the photo would have been enough but it’s nice to hear what the photographer is thinking when they took the photo. good luck with the challenge

Oh nice! I experience wabi-sabi in my dining room, as I’ve left some of Cletus’s lovely kitten scratchings. It’s part of the house 🙂

This sounds great, I’m looking forward to reading your posts for the AZ challenge. I was also interested in your previous themes. I’m new to this, a first timer in the A-Z challenge. Was one of your previous themes more successful than others? Can I ask, how much did you write for each post?
Hi! And welcome to the challenge!! It really is a lot of fun. I don’t know if any of my past themes were more popular than the others – I never really paid attention, although I believe I got comments for all of the posts. As for how much I wrote, well to tell you the truth, it kind of depended on how much time I had, since I do this challenge pretty much from the seat of my pants 🙂 I keep thinking I will prepare in advance, and never do. Which is what I will be doing this year again! My only advice is to have fun – if it’s feeling like too much work, lessen the load 🙂 We will love whatever you post!
I have never heard of this style of photography, but it sounds fascinating.

Since I’m 84, I’m all for touting broken down and worn out things! Your area is so magnificent. Last year I published a memoir about spending 70 years to solve the mystery of my immigrant parents—A Danish/Seattle father and Canadian/Ukranian Alberta mother. We took the Seattle to Victoria ferry and had dinner with my Canadian relatives who have now moved from Alberta to B.C.Surely God’s country!
I’m from Saskatchewan, so I can attest to that sentiment. Don’t get me wrong – I love Sask., but I love having no winter more!!
Finding you and your blog makes the #Challenge one of my favorite yearly outings. I look forward to spending time with you this month. Thanks for joining me on my bookstore tour this April. A lot of work, but a grand payoff with new blogging destinations. I’ll be back.
