All shook up.

A response in avoidance of the Daily Post’s Writing Prompt https://dailypost.wordpress.com/prompts/childhood-revisited/

So, as I posted last night, we had an earthquake.  It was pretty weird.  Kevin and I were sitting on the couch, at about 11:30 pm binge-watching the last couple of episodes of Jessica Jones (wow!) when it felt like a truck hit the front of our house (right behind us on the couch wall) (wow again!)   The cats FREAKED out and scrambled away madly, and Kevin immediately said “was that an earthquake?”

After he ran outside to make sure that a truck had not run into our house (interestingly enough, none of our neighbours were outside checking their houses…), we of course went online to Facebook where there were already many posts informing us that yes, indeed, it was an earthquake, the epicenter of which was in Sidney (about 19K northeast of Victoria) of a 4.8 or 4.9 magnitude.  This was followed by friends posting their experiences and commenting on others’ experiences until the wee hours of the morning.  Social Media, eh?

Everything is fine though.  No damage has been reported from what I’ve seen, and there have been no aftershocks.  And we finished Jessica Jones.  Wow!

If you want to read more, here is that link again I posted last night:  http://globalnews.ca/news/2425646/no-damage-injuries-reported-after-earthquake-rattles-b-c-s-south-coast/

There have been a few earthquakes since we moved here, and I remember feeling one at work a few years back, but that felt more like the floor slid under my feet (which was a very strange sensation).  This one felt much more violent.  Fun fact:  the first earthquake I was ever in (although I didn’t feel it – just saw things in my apartment on the floor afterwards) was in Ottawa.  Wonder if my brother knows that (he is moving there tomorrow…)

Time to finally get that earthquake kit put together!

Here are calm kitties before all hell broke loose.

  1. Glad the earthquake was not so bad as to cause much damage. They are pretty freaky to feel things shaking around. We were in a lot of them (none serious) in Japan. We got used to them after awhile.

  2. Poor kitties, I bet that did shake them up! I am glad to hear there were no damages or injuries. It’s been a long time since we had a noticeable earthquake over here near Seattle (2002, I think) but I still remember what an odd experience it was.

    • It was odd – especially being the only ones on the block actually going outside to see what had happened. Guess no one else felt it or wanted to go out into the cold…

  3. I’m going to tell Gibbs about this event and how he was lucky that last night’s snow plow was nothing in comparison to an earthquake. Glad everything is okay and you finished Jessica Jones. Happy New Year! 🙂

  4. Glad all is well.

  5. Glad you’re ok! I’m surprised the kitties were so mellow before the thing. They say animals start acting strange before a quake.

    • Thanks! The kitties were completely un-fussed and comatose until the bang. I didn’t notice them acting odd before hand at all. But maybe that’s because they are always acting odd…

  6. Indeed … last night’s rumble was a bit unsettling. I went on twitter for my immediate updates; felt like all of Victoria was on there. Glad to hear all is well.

  7. Glad there hasn’t been any damage. Broken water pipes and downed power lines in the middle of winter would be no fun I’m guessing. Or a hole in the wall for that matter. Lucky it wasn’t a truck then.

It’s so bizarre that you have a Sidney in Victoria….

    • At least in winter here you would be ok without heat for a bit (our house sometimes feels like there’s no heat in it with the lack of insulation prevalent in Victoria…)

  8. So glad all is well after your quake there! Happy New Year! 🙂
