Before I start, I need to state for the record that this IS an avoidance prompt.  It was written before the Daily Prompt came out this morning.  It’s just coincidence that this blogger is blogging today about a very strange land…Just saying…

So, going through my pictures from my brief, but inspirational, road trip, what shall I post next?  Perhaps you would like to see some of the architecture?

Concrete.  Grey concrete.  A concrete jungle in the middle of stunning mountain scenery.   It does have a kind of appealing beauty as you wander around for a couple of days in the sunlight, but imagine being on this campus for 4 years, most of the time during the rainy/foggy season.  I don’t know about you, but that thought depresses me.

Anyway, the “modernist concrete” buildings at SFU Burnaby were designed in 1963 by Arthur Erickson Here is where the SFU website talks about him:  https://www.sfu.ca/archives/archives-program/outreach/architechture.html.  And here is his website (note that he died in 2009):  http://www.arthurerickson.com/

Here are some of those buildings:

A little pond in the middle of everything – I believe some episodes of StarGate SG1 were filmed here.  This is part of the huge space known as the Academic Quadrangle.  Note that the surrounding buildings have no first floor.  There is, however, a basement for offices and classrooms.  Nice, eh?  We wouldn’t want students to actually see the sun (the few times it appears) while they are in class.

There was one different building:  The Diamond Alumni Centre, which was where several of the workshop events were held.  It’s basically on the side of the mountain, so you can’t see any of it from the street.
